How to use an aspect ratio changer

First of all, let’s make sure we all know what aspect ratio is. It is the ratio of some video or image’s width to its height. As a rule, it looks like two numbers with a colon in between. For example, 1:1 means that width and height of a picture are the same, and 16:9 is a widescreen video aspect ratio with a width of 16 units and height of 9.

You may need to change the aspect ratio of an image or clip, to make sure it is compatible with the device or platform you plan to use. For example, Instagram portrait media need the aspect ratio of 4:5, while YouTube videos require 16:9 only.

So ask yourself, where your file is going to appear and check the requirements. We, by the way, have a few articles covering all the YouTube video sizes, Instagram requirements, and Facebook post and ad specs.

So you’ve found out that your recording doesn’t have the proper aspect ratio, now you need to somehow fix that. You could do that in some professional software but it’ll be much easier to change the video aspect ratio online with the help of our tool.

Let’s see how it works.

  1. Add your video or photo

Whether you are on Mac, Windows, iOS, or Android, open any of the browsers you prefer and go to Clideo’s Video Resizer. Click the blue “Choose file” button to add your file.

It can be of any format — MP4, AVI, JPEG, MOV, PNG, or any other. You can even add a link from your Dropbox or Google drive cloud storage by clicking on the small arrow.

  2. Change the aspect ratio

Once the file is uploaded, in the right sidebar of the editor, you will find various options. You can select any of the following social media:

    • Instagram
    • Facebook
    • YouTube
    • Twitter
    • Snapchat
    • LinkedIn
    • Pinterest

Then you can choose one of the predefined presets for the selected social medium. This can be handy when you don’t want to bother about the proper aspect ratio or size. Every possible option is already there, just choose the one best suited to your needs.

As an alternative, you can select “Custom” instead of any social network. This will allow you to set a custom aspect ratio or even specific width and height in pixels.

Then you can put the finishing touches using the “Crop options” settings at the bottom right of the sidebar. Don’t be afraid to experiment and try all of them, in the preview area to the left you will immediately see the outcome.

Once you are done, hit the “Export” button.

  3. Download the result

Double-check that everything looks exactly as you planned. Then you can download the file to your device or save it to Google Drive or Dropbox online storage.

To try other settings, hit “Edit” to get back to the previous screen.
