Make a meme from a photo online
The internet is literally bursting with memes. You can’t scroll more than three posts down a social media feed without your eyes falling over one.
And it’s not surprising why; memes have become a way for people around the world to relate to one another through humour, no matter where they’re from.
However, if you’re looking to create your own by making a photo into a meme, you might not know where to start. Memes have a particular format, for instance, the bold, capitalised text that’s often used.
Depending on where you’re planning to share your meme, you’re also going to have to think about the dimensions of the image as well as the ratio. Thankfully, there’s a tool that can do all this for you, formatting everything automatically and leaving you to worry about the creative part.
What’s more, it’s done all in one place, completely online (from your browser!) and for free - meaning you won’t need to download any apps or software that can not only take up valuable disk drive space but often turn out to be full of ads.
And so here’s how to make your very own meme images or videos in three easy steps...
Upload your photo (or video)
The first step in getting your creative meme-making juices flowing only requires that you head over to Clideo’s Meme Generator tool. This works through any browser whether you’re on Safari on an iPhone or Chrome on a Windows PC.
The first thing you’ll see is a blue ‘Choose file’ icon. Tap this button and you’ll be given the option to upload a file from your device. Most popular image and video file types are supported.
Alternatively, you can hit the down-arrow on the side and a drop-down menu will appear allowing you to upload media already saved in your Dropbox or Google Drive cloud accounts.
Get your meme on
Now you’re in the editor, it’s time to get creative!
Here you can build your creation easily. First off, choose your meme template, opting to have your meme text part of your image or separated by a border. Next, enter the text you want to be displayed at the top and the bottom of the meme (there are 12 fonts to choose from!)
Then it’s time to crop the frame to either add the borders or zoom the image. Finally, choose your dimension ratio. The tool will let you know which social media channel it is best suited for.
For example, if you're making a meme for Instagram Stories, ensure your image is cropped to 9:16 or it won’t display properly in the app. And then the 1:1 option gives you a standard Instagram square media format if you’re posting it in your main feed.
Making a video meme instead? Hit the preview button to ensure it looks the way you want it before continuing. You can also opt to mute it if preferred.
Once you’re happy with how your custom meme looks and you think it’s ready to go, tip the green ‘Meme’ button and it will start to generate.
Download and save
Now it’s time to save your creation, just hit the ‘Download’ button and it’ll save to your device, ready to share. If you’d like to save your meme directly to an online storage account, you can do that, too, just tap the down-arrow like before.
Have some more changes you’d like to make? Simply tap the ‘Back to edit’ link and you’ll be taken back to the editor where you can easily make any additional alterations. And that’s you all done!
