Instagram video formats
Many users might have asked themselves, what video format does Instagram use? You should keep in mind that there are a number of requirements for the content uploaded on Instagram. Video file format is one of many.
You can add video to news feed, Stories, IGTV, live streams, carousel, and ads. But only 2 formats are supported by all the above-mentioned post types, with just a few exceptions that we will describe later.
MOV (QuickTime Movie format)
This is a video container format developed by Apple and used natively in Quicktime. It uses the proprietary Apple compression algorithm to reduce the file size. As a rule, MOV files are of high quality, but their size could be larger than many other multimedia formats.
You can use MOV files in the news feed, stories, carousels, and ads.
MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14 format)
This is also a multimedia container format. It is a more universal one. MP4 is even considered to be an industry standard as it is accepted by many operating systems, including mobile ones, like Android and iOS.
MP4 videos are smaller in their size and allow streaming. This is the reason why it is recommended for live broadcasting and IGTV. And of course, MP4 is compatible with all other post types which makes it the best format for Instagram video.
